If you’ve ever wondered who’s behind 803 Outpost Coffee—why we started it, what shaped us, and what fuels this little husband‑and‑wife company—this week’s podcast episode tells it all.
Missy and I recently joined The Hammock Hangers Podcast to talk about the winding, unexpected path that led us from corporate life… to the Appalachian Trail… to van travel… and eventually to roasting specialty coffee with a mission.

Before 803 Outpost Coffee existed, we were just two people trying to figure out what came next. We stepped away from the corporate world with no grand plan—just a desire to breathe again, to reset, and to reconnect with something real.
The Appalachian Trail became that place.
Between the white blazes, we found clarity. We found purpose. And honestly… we found ourselves. The trail has a way of stripping life down to what matters, and somewhere between the miles, the rainstorms, and the endless instant coffee (which offended my inner coffee snob on a spiritual level), a seed was planted.
We didn’t know it yet, but 803 Outpost Coffee was already forming.
The podcast dives into our years of van travel and backpacking—the seasons where we lived simply, chased trailheads, and learned to appreciate the quiet moments most people rush past.
Those experiences shaped everything about our brand:
803 Outpost Coffee isn’t a corporate creation. It’s a reflection of the life we’ve lived and the places that changed us.
On the podcast, we talk about the moment it clicked:
What if we could take my ultra‑coffee‑snob personality (Missy’s words, not mine) and turn it into something meaningful?
Not just great coffee—though we’re obsessed with that part.
But a mission.
A way to give back to the wilderness that gave us so much.
Every bag we roast is tied to that purpose. Every order helps support reforestation and environmental efforts. And every cup is a reminder of the trail that started it all.
If you’re new to 803 Outpost Coffee—or even if you’ve been with us from the beginning—this podcast episode is one of the best ways to learn who we really are.
It’s raw, honest, and full of stories we’ve never shared publicly before.
