Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian, founder of JNP Coffees, stands as one of the most significant figures in the modern Burundi coffee landscape. After being raised in Bujumbura, Jeanine pursued an MBA from Northwestern University's esteemed Kellogg School of Management. Her journey through corporate America ultimately led her back to her roots, where she established Burundi Friends International. This non-profit organization, now in its 13th year, is dedicated to funding educational and economic empowerment for rural communities in Burundi. After initially marketing Burundi coffees for friends and family in the United States, Jeanine saw the potential to lead the effort herself, which led to the creation of JNP Coffee.
A core mission of JNP Coffee is the empowerment of women. In collaboration with local advocates for women's rights, Jeanine established the Burundi chapter of the International Women’s Coffee Alliance (IWCA). Today, this powerful network includes over 2,000 farmer members. Their coffee is distinguished by its traceability, positive impact, and the end-of-year premiums it generates for everyone in the supply chain. The success of the IWCA model inspired JNP to create additional programs to expand their support and premium-generating opportunities to even more farmers.
This month's coffee comes from one such initiative: the "Dushime" program. The name translates from Kirundi to "let's be thankful." The program was born when a community leader from a producer group in Kayanza Province—arguably Burundi's most renowned coffee region—sought a partnership with JNP. He was drawn by their reputation for providing assistance and post-harvest premiums. The Dushime program offers these groups quality consulting, lot selection, and marketing, ensuring end-of-year premiums. This specific coffee, a blend of two distinct lots, is named Incuti, the Kirundi word for "relative" or "friend." It's a perfect name to celebrate a new, collaborative relationship between Burundian producers. In the competitive coffee-growing provinces of Kayanza and Ngozi, washing stations often pay above the minimum price for top-quality cherry. JNP Coffee enhances this by providing second payments directly to farmers and investing in community-building and educational opportunities.
The Incuti group uses a meticulous fully washed process, typical of Burundi's finest coffees. First, coffee cherries are floated to sort by density and remove any visible defects. They are then depulped and fermented. Following fermentation, the wet parchment is moved through concrete channels where it is again sorted by density. The drying process is gradual and precise: the parchment begins drying under shade before being moved into the open air. It is piled into pyramids that are methodically flattened and reformed daily, ensuring slow, even drying that locks in the ideal moisture content. This careful processing results in a coffee with a juicy, lime-like acidity—a beautiful expression of its high-elevation Kayanza origin.
Have a great month!!
