June Feature: The Guardians of the Reserve

Origin: Costa Rica – Finca Amistad

The Story: Giving 6,000 Hectares Back to the Wild

In the early 1900s, Roberto Montero’s grandfather purchased a vast tract of land in Coto Brus, near the rugged border of Costa Rica and Panama. Today, Roberto stands as a third-generation keeper of that land, but his legacy isn't measured by how much territory he conquered—it’s measured by how much he protected.

In an incredible act of conservation, 97% of the original family estate has been dedicated entirely to forest preservation. In fact, Roberto gave 6,000 hectares back to the wilderness, donating it to form La Amistad International Park—the largest natural reserve in Central America. Of the remaining land, only a fraction is used for cultivation, while the rest remains a wild, untouched paradise teeming with native wildlife. This farm is certified Organic and designated as Smithsonian Bird Friendly, meaning the canopy belongs to the creatures first, and the coffee second.

The Community: More Than a Harvest

True stewardship means taking care of the people who walk the soil. Because Finca Amistad sits on the frontier, it draws indigenous seasonal pickers and their families from neighboring Panama every harvest. Roberto protects them like his own, providing housing and free medical care.

Back home in the local village of Las Mellizas, he provides over 100 year-round, full-time jobs through the estate's coffee and dried fruit operations. From distributing school supplies to the children to hosting an annual celebration for his crew, Roberto runs Finca Amistad like a community, not a corporation.

The Craft: Nurtured by Volcanic Soil

Grown at 1,200–1,500 MASL in nutrient-dense volcanic loam, these Caturra and Catuai varietals are fully washed and sun-dried to absolute perfection.

We’ve given this lot a Medium Roast to let its unique, shade-grown complexity step into the spotlight. It balances a vibrant, wild-berry energy with a remarkably rich, comforting finish.

Are your pods fresher than store‑bought brands?

Absolutely. Most pods sit in warehouses for months. Ours are roasted after you order, then ground and packed immediately for maximum flavor and aroma.

Are your pods compatible with my machine?

Yes — our pods work with all standard Keurig® and K‑Cup® style brewers.

Are your pods recyclable?

Yes. Our pods use recyclable materials. Simply let them cool, remove the lid and grounds, and recycle the cup where facilities exist.

Do fresh‑roasted pods really taste different?

They do. Fresh coffee has brighter flavor, richer aroma, and a cleaner finish. Once you taste fresh‑roasted pods, it’s hard to go back to stale, mass‑produced ones.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.

Damages and issues

Please inspect your order upon reception and contact us immediately if the item is defective, damaged or if you receive the wrong item, so that we can evaluate the issue and make it right.

Exceptions / non-returnable items

Certain types of items cannot be returned, like perishable goods, custom products (such as special orders or personalized items). Please get in touch if you have questions or concerns about your specific item.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept returns on sale items or gift cards.

Exchanges

The fastest way to ensure you get what you want is to return the item you have, and once the return is accepted, make a separate purchase for the new item.

European Union 14 day cooling off period

Notwithstanding the above, if the merchandise is being shipped into the European Union, you have the right to cancel or return your order within 14 days, for any reason and without a justification. As above, your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging. You’ll also need the receipt or proof of purchase.

Refunds

We will notify you once we’ve received and inspected your return, and let you know if the refund was approved or not. If approved, you’ll be automatically refunded on your original payment method within 10 business days. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.
